Field Palette

Painting knife or palette knife painting on canvas board is a quick way to produce a beautiful painting. The above rendering of fields and sky was done by spreading paint with the flat side of a knife. Darker areas and crisper lines were rendered with the edge of the knife.  Because I paint with acrylic, drying time is short. In the above piece I was able to add color, dragging it over the top of a previous layer fairly quickly.

Try this: Buy a pack of artist’s knives at your local art or craft store. Plastic knives are cheaper and perhaps a good way to experiment with this type of painting. Good stainless steel painting knives run considerably more. For detailed steps, look up palette knife videos on YouTube.
